Making Your Own Aromatherapy Products

The manufacturers of aromatherapy products are making a huge profit. If you consider the sheer volume of these products currently on the market compared to the cost of production, then you can imagine the huge net profits being made. The body lotions, oils, bath salts, candles and soap are all very popular with women but there are some scents marketed towards men. The manufacturers do not want anyone to feel left out. But you can avoid paying the high prices by learning about essential oils and making the products yourself.

Most bath salts, lotions and candles all start off with a base, plus aromatherapy essential oils. It is the oils, of course, that give the product its scent. Different scents will illicit a different response from your body. Some people find lavender to be very effective in calming their mood and producing a feeling of tranquility. Peppermint oil is used to boost energy levels and give the body a wake-up call. Knowing which scent does what is essential information to have and will determine how you make your body lotions, pillar candles and body massage oils.

It is important when making aromatherapy products that you know something about the essential oil that you intend to use for the end product. Some essential oils are different than others. One oil may be quite fine for use in body lotions or bath salts and another one may cause burning or irritation of the skin. Different oils are meant for different purposes. You cannot use oil meant for an oil burner on your skin. Even the type of base you begin with can make a difference to the final product.

Once you have the oils figured out, it is time to move to the base part. The base is the beginning foundation of whatever you are trying to create. Take for example body lotions and soaps. Both may have the same essential oil but there will be two completely different bases. If you need help trying to decide what base to use or even how to make the aromatherapy products, then your best bet will be to purchase a kit that contains everything or buy a book that can help steer you in the right direction.

Today's Tip On Aromatherapy

Did you know that aromatherapy is a relatively new term when compared to how long the actual practice of using aromatherapy oils has been around? It is true. The word "aromatherapy" was not coined until the 1920's. It has long been thought that aromatherapy essential oils could be used to heal the body and spirit. Ancient cultures across the globe have all used massage techniques and aromatic flowers or herbs to help people. Tinctures and teas made from certain plants and herbs were considered invaluable medicines in their time. It is funny how the word came about from sheer coincidence.
